Tape-In vs. Keratin Tips vs. Slim Weft Hair Extensions: Choosing the Right Method for Your Client

Tape-In vs. Keratin Tips vs. Slim Weft Hair Extensions: Choosing the Right Method for Your Client

Most arguments about hair extension methods are really arguments about the consultation. The hair does not decide between tape-in, keratin and weft. Your client's density, the way she wears her hair, how often she can come back and what she will actually do at home decide it. Get those four right and the method usually picks itself.

What should decide the method?

Four things, roughly in this order. How much the attachment has to hide. Whether she wears her hair down or pulled back. How often she can realistically sit in your chair again. And what she will do at home when nobody is watching.

Price matters, but it belongs last, because the cheaper method a client cannot maintain is the expensive one six months later. Notice that none of the four is about the hair itself. Quality is a separate question and it is settled before this conversation starts.

When is tape-in the right call?

Regular Tape-In is the fastest professional application you can offer. It goes in quickly, it comes out quickly, and the maintenance appointment is short. For the client who wants length and volume and who will actually come back on schedule, it is usually the easiest yes.

Long Tape-In is the same idea with the decision moved to you. It comes as one continuous piece that you cut to the section instead of working from fixed widths, which is worth it when placement is the part you care about most.

When is keratin the right call?

Keratin I-Tip and Keratin F-Tip go in strand by strand, and that is the whole argument for them. The result moves like hair because it is attached like hair, and there is usually no line to find, whatever the angle. For the client who wears her hair up, who parts it differently every week, or who simply does not want to think about where the attachment is, this is the method that survives inspection.

What you pay for it is chair time. Strand by strand is the longest appointment of the three, and you should price it and book it as such rather than discovering it halfway through.

When is a weft the right call?

Regular Weft and Slim Weft (Genius Weft) are for stylists working beaded rows and sew-ins. You place more hair with fewer attachment points, and moving a row up is faster than moving forty strands. If you already work this way, the question is rarely whether to use a weft. It is which one lies flat enough on your client's head.

What changes when the hair is fine?

Fine hair is not less hair. It is less cover, which is a different problem. The attachment that disappears in dense hair announces itself in fine hair, and she will usually notice it before you do.

Invisible Tape-In exists for exactly that: a thinner, flatter attachment for the head where a standard tab has nothing to hide behind. Slim Weft is the row version of the same answer, built to sit closer to the scalp. If you are choosing between the two, you are really choosing between individual placement and a continuous row, not between two qualities of hair.

How do the three compare on chair time?

Tape-in.Shortest appointment, shortest maintenance visit, most frequent returns. Best fit for the client who keeps appointments.

Keratin.Longest appointment, most freedom in how she wears it afterwards. Best fit for the client who wants to stop thinking about it between visits.

Weft.In the middle on both, and the fastest to move up once the row is in. Best fit if beaded rows are already how you work.

What does the method change about how you buy?

More than most stylists expect. Keratin is bought by count, as packs of tips. Tape and weft are bought by weight. So one pack does not mean the same amount of hair across the three, and ordering by habit instead of by unit is how you end up short on one method and sitting on the other.

That difference is also what makes stocking hard when your calendar gets busy, which is worth reading about before the season fills up rather than during it.

What if the client does not fit any of the three?

Then stop forcing it. Bulk human hair exists for the custom work and the repairs that a finished product cannot cover. And the client who wants length for one evening rather than for a season is not a booking at all: she is a clip-in sale at your front desk, and treating her as an install is a good way to lose her.

Where does color come into it?

After the method, not before. Once you know how the hair is attaching, you know how much of it sits where the light hits, and that changes what a match has to do. A blend that reads fine in a row can read wrong strand by strand.

That part does not settle on a screen. Phone cameras shift every shade they photograph and salon lighting shifts it again, which is why we keep a showroom in North Miami Beach where you can hold the hair next to your client's, under real light, using the Di Milesi Color System.

Buying at professional pricing starts with registering on our professional page, if you have not done that yet. Approval typically takes one to two business days.

If you are deciding between methods for a specific client, message us on WhatsApp at (786) 965-3647 and describe her hair. Our team works with these three every day and will tell you when the method you are leaning toward is the wrong one.
